Key to our first place :)

Jacob and I are moving in 49 days!! I am super excited to start a new journey but sad to leave our first house together! So I decided to make a little memory of our first place together. It is a very cute idea, and inexpensive way to keep a little piece of your first place!

Things you will need:
Computer and a printer
A key to the house
Picture frame of your liking

Step 1:I started off by googling the town we live in, in our case Jacksonville, NC! I simply typed it in and and centered it to where it showed the whole town! I then screen printed this and opened it up in photoshop.

Step 2: I measured my frame and opened a file up with a 3x3 size, I then pasted on my map from google! I centered it and sized it to my liking!

Step 3: Type your address out and center it to where you would like it to be, in this case I did bottom center. (most likely your best choice since you will be gluing your key on)

Step 4: Print it off when you like the way it looks! Cut it out and tape or glue it to the back of card stock or whatever works for you! Something harder works best since paper is thin and flimsy!

Step 5: Glue on your key in the center of the picture!

Step 6: Ta-da!! You are done! It is that easy!!
The finished product!! I love it, and my husband is going to love it especially since its sporting Oklahoma Sooners :)

This is so simple and easy you can add anything you want to it! I also thought of adding a picture of our house, but in the end loved the map look more!

Simple everyday tips to be more active!

I thought today I would share a list from my college course on just simple tips to be more active throughout your day! Simple things like this can help you burn some extra calories and is just an all around good idea to start working these into your daily routine!

The list is a bit long, but that is because you can substitute any daily routine for a workout related activity! For example not feeling going outside for a walk because its cold? That is okay, clean the house, sweep up, or vacuum! All great ways to be more active on a daily basis!

  • Between commercial breaks do jumping jacks, sit ups, push ups, pull ups, whatever you fancy!
  • Bike to work, school or an appointment
  • Carry a child upstairs
  • Clean the cobwebs from the ceiling
  • Clean the gutters
  • Take stairs instead of an elevator or escalator
  • Cross country ski on the streets when it snows
  • Dig post holes
  • Do errands by walking/biking
  • Edge the yard
  • fix up your garden
  • Enter a walk-a-thon in your area
  • Explore your city by foot
  • Explore a new city by foot
  • Go bowling
  • Go dancing
  • Go for a hike
  • Help out with your child's sports practice
  • Hit a few golf balls
  • Hit some baseballs at the bating cage
  • Lay cement( yeah i thought this was kinda odd myself haha!)
  • Make exercise bets ( like i bet you 20 push up's if you lose, even if you win do them anyways)
  • Move furniture
  • Mow the lawn
  • Paint the walls
  • Park farther away when at the store
  • Plant bushes or trees
  • Play catch with your child or friends
  • Play Frisbee
  • Play golf but do not rent a cart, walk the course!
  • Play tag with children, they are always so hyper its a good way to burn extra calories!!
  • Rent a rowboat
  • Ride a stationary bike while watching TV
  • Run to catch a bus or plane (some airports a huge, great for a nice jog!)
  • Run upstairs
  • Sand the deck or your furniture(by hand!)
  • Scrub the floors
  • Shovel snow
  • Sweep the walkways
  • Take a lunch time hike
  • Take your dog for a walk
  • Trim the hedges
  • Vacuum the floors
  • Walk around a large museum/mall(for all my Minnesota people this one is great for you! MOA!)
  • Walk fast
  • Walk upstairs
  • Walk to work/school
  • Wash and wax your own car
This is just a few things you can do to be more active throughout your day! Of course there is millions of things you can accomplish if you change your lifestyle! Making small steps like this will encourage you to change the way you think and you shall be one step closer to your health and fitness goals! Don't fall into daily temptation when you are trying to reach your goals! Remember to find a workout buddy, you are more likely to workout if someone is holding you accountable!!

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Obesity in America: the sad truth

This post is a little more serious than most I normally do, I have been studying more and more lately as I am trying to finish up my degree before I move..in 51 days(wow that is so fast)!! I have recently been learning more and more about the American's obesity problems and couldn't help but think "wow what happened?!"

Yesterday I was out for a fun in my neighborhood and passed by a gentlemen walking his dog. I usually run through all the cul-de-sac's and streets to get more millage in, I had passed by him 3 or 4 times. The last time I passed him he had just got to his house, I saw his lips moving so I figured he was talking to me. Indeed he was, he was asking how far I was planning on running! I kept my pace and just shouted back "Oh, just a short day today. Maybe 3-4 miles, nothing big"! Right? 3-4 miles is nothing compared to people who run a marathon on a daily basis! He yells back "wow that is so much, you are insane for running that much." I smiled and went on my way... Couldn't help but think..wait what? I am insane? Am I insane because I believe in health and wellness? Because I want to live longer than the national average? Because I think living healthy is the most important thing a person now a days can do?! I was so confused and very distraught by the comment. Is America so lazy that they think 3 miles is insane!? What would he of said If I was running 10 miles that day, I was running a death sentence? It makes me sad that we are creating a generation of children that live off fast food, tv and social networking! When I was growing up we were lucky to watch Saturday morning cartoons. The thing is, I WANTED to be outside!! I would wake up, eat breakfast, and run off to be playing outside. I loved it, I remember getting mad when it would start getting dark and I was forced to come in! I hardly ever see children playing outside anymore, they just want to text on their phones, or Facebook with friends, or watch TV for hours on end!

Did you know that over 61% of American's are overweight and 20% are obese!!! Those are outrageous numbers! Obesity is caused by many factors, genetics and environment being the two main causes. You can have the gene that makes you susceptible to obesity but that doesn't mean you have to put yourself in that environment! If you are taught from a young age how to eat right, engage in daily activity and take care of yourself we wouldn't have such high numbers. The worse part is, there are so many children overweight that it is out of control! Doesn't help that we also have a bullying issue on your hands, so when a child starts to feel better an get out there there is another child taunting them for it! Rule number 1, you CANNOT make fun of someone who is trying to better themselves! If you see a larger person out for a walk or at the gym what gives you the right to say anything?? They are trying and we should be encouraging them and giving our support! You will always see me in support of any person, big or small who is trying to engage in a healthier lifestyle-in fact I am all for everyone being in support!!

Scientist have found over 200 factors that are associated with obesity. Today, I am going to share 12 risk factors that are most common in today's society!

  1. Brain-Centered Obesity.
  2. Cushing's Disease.
  3. Low Thyroid output (hypothyroidism).
  4. Growth-Hormone Deficiency.
  5. Pregnancy.
  6. Oral Contraceptives.
  7. Drug-Induced Weight Gain.
  8. Smoking Cessation.
  9. Sedentary Lifestyle.
  10. Diet.
  11. Psychological and Social Factors.
  12. Socioeconomic and Ethnic Factors.
Of course there are plenty more factors, but these sum of the majority of the issues we have today! A person who sees they fall under on of these 12 should definitely seek out help and start the road to a healthier life before they fall under that 20%! If you or someone you know is having problems with being over weight, please feel free to contact me. If you are not in my area I am more than willing to help out by referring someone and even motivational help from afar! I am always going to be in favor of helping someone achieve their goals! Let's all work together to change these numbers and get America fit and healthy!!

Spring is here!!

Spring is here, and I am so very happy for that too! I love warm weather, everything about spring makes me so happy. Spring is full of so much love, bird chirping every where and more and more people are coming out of their house! I love the way the crisp air feels against my skin while taking that 7 am run...ahh no better feeling!! It is just warm enough to lay out by the beach, but not warm enough to get me in that water just yet!!

So today we embraced this warm beautiful weather and went down to Wilmington with Tex, Tracy and Connor Gill! Connor is just about 6 months so they wanted some updated pictures of him as well of them! I had a blast taking their pictures, of course Connor is my favorite little guy so why wouldn't I? He is so cute, I just love him!!

So after a fun day of picture taking we had lunch at Flaming Amy's Burrito..best place ever! The burritos are legit the size of Africa!! They have so many different ones to choose from as well as make your own..which Jacob loves :) But all in all it was a beautiful day and topped off with some wonderful time with friends!! Tracy and Tex were also nice enough to snap a few of Jacob and I..and I must say Jacob is one handsome man! I sure am one lucky gal to have such an amazing husband!!

Just a cute shot of us with Connor!

Psalm 67:1-2
May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us, that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

Oh so yummy (and healthy) Banana Bread!!

Banana bread is one of my favorites to make! I love making it almost as much as I love eating it :) I thought today I would share this awesome recipe I have!! It is guilt free eating too!

What you will need:
1/3 cup smashed apples(you can use apple sauce as well)
1/2 cup raw honey
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
about 3-4 overly ripe bananas
1 3/4 whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 cup chopped walnuts(or whatever nut you like!)
Nutella (optional)

Directions:
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: In your mixing bowl combine apples and honey...

Step 3:Add eggs and mix well...

Step 4: Add Bananas and vanilla...

Step 5: Add flour and salt. Mix baking soda and hot water in separate container. Mix well and add to mixing bowl. Add in nuts and continue to mix...

Step 6: This is completely optional! I add anywhere from 2-4 tbsp of nutella to the mix. I love the taste and it makes the bread taste even better!! You can opt to add more or less depending on what you like...

Step 7: Spray down the banana pans, I usually use two 9x5's but you can of course use whatever you prefer!

Step 8: Pop them in the oven for 55-60 minutes at 350 degrees. Check with a toothpick or knife to see if it is finished! Since it is oil/butter free it will not be as fluffy as the normal banana bread, but I swear the taste is just as good..if not better :)

The finished product!! Let them cool for a while before cutting into them!

The results are in..

Well they are in! Looks as if I placed 30th in my first race, and I was 10th in the women! I am extremely pleased with these results!! I know its strength like this that comes from above! I could not have done this without the strength God has given me! It amazes me that just about a year ago I was a out-of-shape, barely could run a mile kind of girl! Now I am finding myself addicted to my new found love of running!! Hard work, dedication and the power of God has brought me to much closer to being where I want to be! I am finding myself signing up for races left and right :)

I want to thank my supportive husband who woke up early on his day off just to watch me run!
Erin for having the strength to run this race with me, I am super proud of you girl! You did awesome!!
God for giving me the legs to run <3

The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. Luke 6:38

Live a happier life :)

Well..here I am 5 am and blogging! I woke up around 3 this morning and could not go back to sleep!! I don't know if its because my body thinks I have had enough sleep or just pure excitement for my first race today!! Either way here I am now :)

I was scrolling stalking Facebook while laying in bed trying to get my body to fall back into a sleep when I came across an awesome post a friend of mine had posted. It comes from a site called Purpose Fairy:Ideas and suggestions about life. This particular post is 15 Things you Should Give up in Order to be Happy!

I love it..plain and simple!! It is very well written and thought out as well, kudos to danadmin the author of the post. I believe it is worth the 5 minutes it takes to read!! So go ahead, take a gander, I am sure you are to love it as much as I!!

1. Give up your need to always be right. There are so many of us who can’t stand the idea of being wrong – wanting to always be right – even at the risk of ending great relationships or causing a great deal of stress and pain, for us and for others. It’s just not worth it. Whenever you feel the ‘urgent’ need to jump into a fight over who is right and who is wrong, ask yourself this question: “Would I rather be right, or would I rather be kind?”Wayne Dyer. What difference will that make? Is your ego really that big?

2. Give up your need for control.
Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you – situations, events, people, etc. Whether they are loved ones, coworkers, or just strangers you meet on the street – just allow them to be. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will see how much better will that make you feel.
“By letting it go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try. The world is beyond winning.” Lao Tzu
3. Give up on blame. Give up on your need to blame others for what you have or don’t have, for what you feel or don’t feel. Stop giving your powers away and start taking responsibility for your life.
4. Give up your self-defeating self-talk. Oh my. How many people are hurting themselves because of their negative, polluted and repetitive self-defeating mindset? Don’t believe everything that your mind is telling you – especially if it’s negative and self-defeating. You are better than that.
“The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive.” Eckhart Tolle
5. Give up your limiting beliefs about what you can or cannot do, about what is possible or impossible. From now on, you are no longer going to allow your limiting beliefs to keep you stuck in the wrong place. Spread your wings and fly!
“A belief is not an idea held by the mind, it is an idea that holds the mind” Elly Roselle
6. Give up complaining. Give up your constant need to complain about those many, many, maaany things – people, situations, events that make you unhappy, sad and depressed. Nobody can make you unhappy, no situation can make you sad or miserable unless you allow it to. It’s not the situation that triggers those feelings in you, but how you choose to look at it. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking.
7. Give up the luxury of criticism. Give up your need to criticize things, events or people that are different than you. We are all different, yet we are all the same. We all want to be happy, we all want to love and be loved and we all want to be understood. We all want something, and something is wished by us all.
8. Give up your need to impress others. Stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not just to make others like you. It doesn’t work this way. The moment you stop trying so hard to be something that you’re not, the moment you take of all your masks, the moment you accept and embrace the real you, you will find people will be drawn to you, effortlessly.
9. Give up your resistance to change. Change is good. Change will help you move from A to B. Change will help you make improvements in your life and also the lives of those around you. Follow your bliss, embrace change – don’t resist it.
“Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls”
Joseph Campbell
10. Give up labels. Stop labeling those things, people or events that you don’t understand as being weird or different and try opening your mind, little by little. Minds only work when open. “The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about.” Wayne Dyer
11. Give up on your fears. Fear is just an illusion, it doesn’t exist – you created it. It’s all in your mind. Correct the inside and the outside will fall into place.
“The only fear we have to fear, is fear itself.”
 Franklin D. Roosevelt
12. Give up your excuses. Send them packing and tell them they’re fired. You no longer need them. A lot of times we limit ourselves because of the many excuses we use. Instead of growing and working on improving ourselves and our lives, we get stuck, lying to ourselves, using all kind of excuses – excuses that 99.9% of the time are not even real.
13. Give up the past. I know, I know. It’s hard. Especially when the past looks so much better than the present and the future looks so frightening, but you have to take into consideration the fact that the present moment is all you have and all you will ever have. The past you are now longing for – the past that you are now dreaming about – was ignored by you when it was present. Stop deluding yourself. Be present in everything you do and enjoy life. After all life is a journey not a destination. Have a clear vision for the future, prepare yourself, but always be present in the now.
14. Give up attachment. This is a concept that, for most of us is so hard to grasp and I have to tell you that it was for me too, (it still is) but it’s not something impossible. You get better and better at with time and practice. The moment you detach yourself from all things, (and that doesn’t mean you give up your love for them – because love and attachment have nothing to do with one another,  attachment comes from a place of fear, while love… well, real love is pure, kind, and self less, where there is love there can’t be fear, and because of that, attachment and love cannot coexist) you become so peaceful, so tolerant, so kind, and so serene. You will get to a place where you will be able to understand all things without even trying. A state beyond words.
15. Give up living your life to other people’s expectations. Way too many people are living a life that is not theirs to live. They live their lives according to what others think is best for them, they live their lives according to what their parents think is best for them, to what their friends, their enemies and their teachers, their government and the media think is best for them. They ignore their inner voice, that inner calling. They are so busy with pleasing everybody, with living up to other people’s expectations, that they lose control over their lives. They forget what makes them happy, what they want, what they need….and eventually they forget about themselves.  You have one life – this one right now – you must live it, own it, and especially don’t let other people’s opinions distract you from your path.

Good job isn't it?! Who would have thought a 3am Facebook session could end up teaching me something so interesting? Now if I can just remember to do these on a daily basis I will be happier by the minute..although I am a fairly happy person as it stands now :)

My First Official Race

As most of my friends know I am a runner. I love running its the best stress reveler after a long day of studying!! I would run all day if I could do that, I think someone needs to come up with a new job where all we do is run for the day :) I sure would apply!

Recently I signed up for my first official race! When I was 22 I did do a 5k to benefit Breast Cancer but I walked it, so now I am running my first race! I signed up to run a 10k on March 31, its a benefit run for a Jacksonville High School wrestler who was harmed wrestling. So its a good cause all around, I get to cross off my first race and I get to help a teenager in need! The run also has a 5k for those of you who don't enjoy running as much as I seem to ;)

My goal is to run the race in under an hour, I have been timing myself and I believe I can do this! I am not the fastest run out there so to just to finish it will be an accomplishment! I have posted the link at the bottom of this blog if any of you bloggers want to join me or just donate to this young man!!

Next race I have signed up for is the Dirty Hog on May 5..that will be more than just running!! I will leave that for another day :)

Gossip

Gossip is destructive. When you base your relationship with someone on the gossip you listen to, you systematically destroy that relationship. At some point in time, that destruction become irreparable, with every element of trust dissolved. Trust is fragile. Chances are, when it’s been challenged too many times, on too many levels, it is gone completely and will never be able to be rebuilt. All because of gossip. You become hypocritical when you say you don’t gossip yet base a relationship on things you’ve heard from others, which is gossip. Remember, if they will gossip to you, they WILL gossip about you… and they have...

Today, I saw this on a friend's status and thought it was very powerful. Powerful enough to write a blog about it! You should always remember never to judge someone off what you have heard or others have said. You need to form your own opinion about someone, then you reserve the right to like or dislike that person. Still doesn't mean you should go tell the world about what you think they do or don't do.

Truly get to know a person before setting them up for failure. You never know, you might end up getting along and having A LOT in common...

December 15, 2009

Two days ago Natalie celebrated her 22nd birthday up in Heaven. It has been three years since she passed away, and I miss her more and more each day. There isn't a day that goes by that I do not miss her. Sheryl and I were talking about plans to go and visit her grave finally this coming up Summer. We both have not gotten up the nerve to go and see her yet, but it is something I feel I am stronger enough to do now. I am the stronger one between Sheryl and I so I will be the back bone for her and I. We both miss her so damn much. She will never be forgotten...

She is up in Heaven with her Mother, Susan, and I know they are both shining down on all of us here :)

North Carolina Sunset

I took this picture of the skyline the night before Thanksgiving. It was an amazing sunset, I swear the fall and winter may bring cold but also have such beautiful sunsets. Sometimes I even think that my Momo makes them especially amazing just to show me shes watching over me :)

Laguna Beach

“Don't grow up too quickly, lest you forget how much you love the beach.”

Before I knew

Oh, it was the first time I fell in love
the first time I felt my heart
it was the first time I sang out loud all through the night
but before I knew I was lost,
before I knew I was a prisoner
and I still can't find a way to make it right
The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. Luke 6:38
